Tiki’s is conveniently located near Gulf State Park where you can coast around lovely Lake Shelby or hit The Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail. The Lake Shelby Loop trail is about 6 miles around, with great views of the lake and its wetlands. The Backcountry Trail will lead you through six different ecosystems for over 15 miles of biking fun and seven unique trails. Bike along historic Native American trails, through coastal dunes and along sand ridges, over marshes filled with gently waving cattails, wildflowers, and pitcher plants, through maritime forests with stately live oaks, flatwoods filled with palmettos and scrub oaks, and more. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the local wildlife. You may see alligators, otters, snakes, foxes, and maybe a coyote, armadillo, gopher tortoise, or if you’re lucky, a bobcat! The trail is also a stop on the Alabama Coastal Birding Trail making it an excellent place for birdwatching. Don’t forget your camera! Tired of biking? Visit the Butterfly Garden! The Backcountry Trails are spread out along the peninsula, and there is sure to be a trailhead near your rental.
Farther out on the tip of the peninsula at Fort Morgan, the Fort Morgan Road Trail is perfect for a long family ride. This paved trail is almost 11 miles (out-and-back), and there’s a ‘rest stop’ about 4 miles in which could make a more manageable trip for younger kids. Take a break after your bike ride and visit the historic masonry fort as you cool down!
