Cinco de Mayo! Time for all the tacos and margaritas you can handle! But while tacos and margaritas are big part of the celebrations here in the U.S., Cinco de Mayo is also a celebration of Mexican culture, and a celebration of standing up to overwhelming odds and coming out on top. Here are a few suggestions for your Fort Morgan Cinco de Mayo celebration.

More History and Fun

Those overwhelming odds the Mexicans fought against were in 1862 at the Battle of Puebla when around 2,000 Mexican troops battled about 6,000 French troops and won! Take the time to watch a documentary or movie about this historic Mexican battle so you can fully appreciate the holiday. Put it up on the flat screen in the living area for everyone to enjoy while they nosh on tacos and margaritas.

Take a step back into history with a visit to historic Fort Morgan. This masonry fort has been defending our coast since before the Battle of Puebla, and it’s fun to explore the fort, watch live re-enactments and cannon firings. After exploring the fort, you can picnic on the grounds or the beach, then make your way to one of the adjacent trailheads to Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge. You can spend the day hiking or biking along the trails as they wind through various coastal habitats. We suggest leaving the tacos and margaritas back in the car during your hike, as some of the local wildlife may want a taste.

The Beach

Take an easy approach to your laid-back Cinco de Mayo festivities and spend the day at the beach. It’s just a few short steps away from the deck of your vacation rental; everything is close to the beach here in Fort Morgan! Take a picnic of easy to eat burritos, tacos and empanadas, and of course a cooler with beer and a few more margaritas. And since your rental is just steps away, restocking your cooler and picnic basket is a piece of cake. And there’s no driving…so you can enjoy the margaritas all day.

Tequila and More!

After a day of beach fun and hiking through the wild, spend a nice quiet night in your rental and have a virtual margarita or tequila tasting. Get all your friends online and break out the tequila. Try Dano’s (Dangerous Tequila) Blanco, (produced by one of the oldest family-owned distilleries in Mexico), or the oldie but goodie Jose Cuervo Especial Gold. For fun, give Teremana Tequila a try; The Rock really does know tequila!

Use some of that tequila to make palomas, which may be the most popular Mexican cocktail. It’s easy: tequila, grapefruit and lime juice, a little sugar and some club soda, and a salty rim, all to taste. A perfect cocktail for the beach and Fort Morgan Cinco de Mayo!

A Mexican Inspired Menu

You’re going to need something to snack on while you’re tasting all that tequila, so buy plenty of chips for your fresh guacamole or salsa, and for the nachos! Cook your own delicious Mexican meal in your fully equipped vacation rental. Try a recipe that uses fresh seafood, preferably some you have caught earlier in the day or bought at the local seafood market. Fish or shrimp tacos are pretty easy and pretty tasty too. Spread the fixings for tacos or quesadillas out on the spacious kitchen counter and let everyone make their own.

If you like to bake, try your hand at delicious sugary churros. You can buy churro mix online ahead of time, then find a recipe for baked churros (no frying involved). Don’t forget the chocolate dipping sauce! The kitchen in your Gulf Shores vacation rental comes fully equipped, so all you need to add are your ingredients. And most of our rentals have open floor plans, so the cook can enjoy all the fun while preparing tasty treats for everyone.

Don’t want to cook? Pick up your phone and order Mexican take-out from a local Mexican restaurant in nearby Gulf Shores. The Cactus Cantina Mexican Grill, Tequila Mexican Restaurant or El Toro Mexican Restaurant are all good choices, and they really aren’t that far.

More Mexican Inspired Fun

After tequila tasting, you’ll be ready for Mexican Karaoke or learning a few Mexican dance moves. Don’t worry, the open floor plan in your rental has plenty of space for dancing or singing the night away. YouTube is full of videos on basic Bachata, Jarabe Tapatío (also known as the Mexican Hat Dance), and more traditional dances you can try.
