Memorial Day is usually filled with parades and concerts, cannon firings and 21-gun salutes, cookouts, and everything red, white, and blue. There may be fireworks and solemn wreath-laying ceremonies too. All to honor the military men and women who have given their lives for our freedom throughout the years. Fort Morgan is at the western tip of a peninsula steeped in military history, and we are proud to celebrate that history and our servicemen and women on Memorial Day. Memorial Day Ceremonies in the Area
Head to Fort Morgan! This historic fort has been a vital part of our nation’s coastal defenses, from the War of 1812 through WWII. The Fort played a major role in one of the most important battles in the Civil war, the Battle of Mobile Bay, where the Union fleet attacked a smaller Confederate fleet and the three forts guarding the entrance to Mobile Bay. Led by Rear Admiral Farragut, the Union ships pushed on through the heavily mined (then called torpedoes) bay, during which Farragut uttered his famous “Damn the torpedoes” as a rallying cry to his fleet. The fort will have their annual wreath-laying ceremony, along with live reenactments, historic weapons demonstrations and artillery firing over the weekend. A visit to this historic masonry fort is must anyway, but on Memorial Day, this step back in history is particularly poignant.
Gulf Shores may host their annual fireworks on the beach, depending on the weather and other restrictions. And the Mobile National Cemetery is just a short drive away, with wreath-laying and other military ceremonies.
Have an Outdoor Celebration
Visitors to Fort Morgan come because they love the beach, the seclusion and the quieter coastal experience. Head outdoors to enjoy the day, and no matter where you are, don’t forget to stop at 3 pm for a moment of silence for our veterans.
Your family can spend hours hiking the trails in the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge near Fort Morgan. Part of the Alabama Coastal Birding Trail, the Refuge is home to several endangered species including the cute little Alabama Beach Mouse. This is one of the last undisturbed coastal barrier habitats in the country, and the Refuge’s trails wind through several distinct habitats including woodlands, dunes and wetlands. It’s easy to take a minute or two for quiet contemplation and appreciation of our veterans and our freedoms as you gaze past pristine freshwater lakes, coastal swamps and wetlands or watch a bald eagle soar high above the clouds.
Of course, everyone can spend the weekend at the beach! The kids can build sandcastles, swim in the bright Gulf water and search for shells and all those interesting things cast up by the waves. On Monday, put on some patriotic music, set up a craft table on the deck and let them create flags made from shells or driftwood they’ve collected and then paint everything red, white and blue. Rent our beach-front Fort Morgan lodging and you can literally be steps away from the bright, white beach. If the beach gets too crowded, gather everyone up and take a few steps back from it all to your rental where you can stay safe and start family movie night! Free Wi-Fi and large flat-screen TVs throughout your rental make it easy.
Go ahead with your cookout, even if it needs to be smaller this year. Make a stop at the local market for fresh caught seafood and fixings for your own low country boil. Or just boil a few pounds of shrimp or grill a few delicious snappers. Anglers in your group can fish in the surf in front of your rental, or off the pier at Gulf State Park, then bring home their catch for the cookout. Grill it all out on your vacation rental’s deck or in its fully equipped kitchen. Or just grab some take-out from a local restaurant (try Tacky Jack’s, Sassy Bass Amazin’ Grill or Behind the Pines) and eat out on the deck overlooking the beach. Fresh seafood and a beautiful beach view is something to be thankful for.
Other Ideas for Celebrating
