Hit the Water This Labor Day in Gulf Shores!

Head to the beach! This could be your last chance of the season to enjoy the bright, white sands and brilliant blue waters of our lovely Gulf beaches. Enjoy an action packed weekend or just spend a lazy weekend gathering strength before you have to head back to reality. Book one of our beachfront rentals so you don’t waste time on travel – the beach can be just a few steps away!

Stake out a spot on the sand so you can finish up that primo tan and watch the kids build the last sandcastles of the season. Lay back, relax and watch pelicans fish for snacks while you save up your energy for a friendly, late afternoon volleyball competition. If we’re still observing social distancing, just make a line in the sand, or put those pool noodles to use. A circle or square around your spot will keep you and the kids safe.

Looking for action this Labor Day in Gulf Shores? Rent jet skis for the entire family, or maybe try a little parasailing. I know the kids will love both! Relax after the fun with a quiet stroll along the surf, looking for that perfect shell or sand dollar to take home.

Charter a deep sea fishing adventure that everyone will remember. Head offshore over deep water and try your skills against amberjack, tuna, mahi-mahi and maybe an occasional shark. Or take things down a notch and kayak through calm bay and bayou waters for up close encounters with marine life. Landing a sheepshead or redfish is a totally different experience when you’re in a kayak!

Grab the family and head to Gulf State Park for the day. Pack a picnic lunch to enjoy after a morning full of beach fun or fishing from the pier. Rent kayaks, canoes or jet skis for fun on Lake Shelby. Hike or bike over the 30 miles of paved trails and boardwalks including those in The Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail as it meanders through different ecosystems. You’ll trek over freshwater marshes, coastal hardwood swamps, dunes and more. The park is overflowing with wildlife, and is home to turtles, snakes, lizards, raccoons. During the fall and spring the park is a birder’s paradise. Keep an eye out for alligators! Be sure to leave time for the Butterfly Pavilion. If you’re tired of just hiking around, try geocaching.

Other Area Activities

Step back in time when make a stop at Fort Morgan before you head back into the real world. This historic masonry fort has been guarding the Gulf since the War of 1812, and is still a distinctive presence on the peninsula. For more fun, make sure you leave time on your visit for the fort’s escape room! History buffs and puzzle lovers will be in heaven. And after touring the museum, you can fish from the public pier, or hike through the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge is part of the Alabama Coastal Birding Trail and is home to several endangered species including the tiny Alabama Beach Mouse. This may be the last undisturbed coastal barrier habitat you’ll see. The Refuge’s trails wind through several distinct habitats including woodlands, dunes and wetlands.

Of course, there are water parks, amusement parks and mini-golf parks in the area to provide plenty of entertainment for the kids. The Wharf in Orange Beach has activities for the entire family – an arcade, mini-golf, a Ferris wheel, movie theater and a zip line! Plus, there are plenty of bars and restaurants to keep you refreshed.

And who doesn’t love the zoo? Close encounters with lemurs, kangaroos and camels are waiting at the Alabama Coastal Zoo this Gulf Shores Labor Day weekend. The zoo is home to over 100 species including many endangered species. Pangolin (the world’s most poached animal), beautiful Bengal tigers (the zoo has three!) and black leopards, toucans and gopher tortoises are just a few of the amazing animals you’ll visit.
