The Fort’s History
Constructed during 1813, Fort Morgan saw combat in the War of 1812, the Spanish-American War, the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. It was during the Civil War’s Battle of Mobile Bay that Union Admiral Farragut uttered those famous words, “Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead.” After being inactive for a while, in WW1 the fort trained men in new artillery weapon systems and was part of a nationwide Morse code communication network. In WW2, the fort was part of the nation’s coastal defenses.
The fort became a National Historic Landmark in 1960. This historic pentagonal-shaped fort museum is an example of how our coastal masonry forts have adapted over the years. Today, it offers a wide variety of activities year-round near our Fort Morgan house rentals: living history events, Candlelight Dusk Tours, and escape rooms. There is a boat launch and fishing from the site has always been popular.
Want to learn more about the history of the area? Jump on the ferry for a short fun ride across Mobile Bay to Dauphin Island and Fort Gaines. The Fort stands guard at the entry to Mobile Bay and still has its original cannons, blacksmith shop, and tunnels. And the island also holds the Audubon Bird Sanctuary, making it great fun for the birders in your group.
Nature, Wildlife & More Near Our Fort Morgan House Rentals
Most of this skinny little peninsula is part of the Bon Secour Wildlife Refuge (part of the Alabama Coastal Birding Trail and a stopover for migrating birds). Several trails wind through various ecosystems: maritime forests, wetlands, dunes and scrub habitat, a saltwater lagoon and transitional habitats between. Wander the refuge on your own or take one of the many guided bird walks, dune hikes or night prowls offered year-round.
Keep an eye out for the many creatures living here as you hike the trails: bobcats, armadillos, and red foxes to name a few. And if you’re lucky, you’ll spot a loggerhead or Kemp’s Ridley turtle or the Alabama beach mouse, just a few of the endangered species that call the Refuge home.
Be sure to climb the observation tower for an amazing bird’s eye view of the area. The view from the Tower towards Gator Lake and its namesake reptilian inhabitants is one of many Instagram-worthy photograph opportunities just waiting for you here. And, if you’re visiting during spring or fall, make sure to pack your binoculars! This is prime birdwatching territory for migrating birds. With over 370 species of birds documented in the area, you’ll be sure to add several new entries to your life list.
Fort Morgan is at the end the peninsula, on a narrow strip of land separating the Gulf from the Bay. It’s practically all beach, and its beaches aren’t as crowded as those in Orange Beach or Gulf Shores. You can enjoy the pristine, bright sand without fighting the crowds. Sunbathe, stroll the surf looking for the perfect souvenir shell or sand dollar, or have a sandcastle building contest with your kids. All your favorite beach activities are more enjoyable on the quieter, less traveled beaches on the tip of this lovely peninsula.
The Kiva Dunes Golf Course is the top-ranked public golf course in the state, and it’s here at Fort Morgan. This 18-hole course incorporates water and dunes into its unique, windy layout. First opened in 1995, the course’s unique layout was co-created by former U.S. Open Champion Jerry Pate. Just over 7,100 yards of play area makes its way through acres of natural coastal habitat, dunes, and marsh.
