Things to Do While You’re Vacationing in Fort Morgan

Fort Morgan is laid back, relaxed, and a little secluded. It certainly is much less crowded than other beaches along the peninsula. And since you’ve made it a point to spend your vacation in this easygoing coastal community, take full advantage it! It’s all about enjoying the beach and communing with nature here.

You can enjoy all your favorite beach activities without the hustle and bustle of Gulf Shores or the spring break frenzy in Orange Beach. Enjoy building sandcastles with your kids without the swarm of usual beachgoers crowding in, and savor sunset strolls along the beach where you can actually hear the waves crashing on to the shore. If you’ve been looking for a gentler, peaceful place to spend your precious vacation days, you’ve made the right choice.

You can’t visit Fort Morgan without realizing how much history is here on this little peninsula. Fort Morgan has been guarding the coast since the early 1930s, right on up through WWII. This pentagonal fort offers a look back in time with its preserved masonry walls, museum, canon firings, and living history reenactments. There’s also an escape room where you can test your skills; you’re a captured spy in the Civil War and it’s your duty to try to escape! The Fort also has pristine beaches, nature trails, and a public pier for perfecting your fishing skills.
Besides being a history buff’s dream, Fort Morgan is also a birder’s paradise. As part of the Alabama Coastal Birding Trail, the coast comes alive during migration months. From ospreys and herons to tiny hummingbirds, birders can easily add to their life list while enjoying the beautiful coastal habitat around the Fort.

Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge is also on the Alabama Coastal Birding Trail. With over 7,000 acres of coastal habitat and four trails, the refuge offers a glimpse into several coastal beach habitats. Hike through past dunes, wetlands and lagoons and wind through maritime forests and you may catch a glimpse of one of the many endangered species that call the refuge home, including the Alabama beach mouse and loggerhead turtle. Be sure to climb the observation tower on the Pine Beach Trail for a great panoramic view of Gator Lake and the surrounding refuge, and don’t forget your binoculars and your camera!

Of course, if you find yourself craving the hustle and bustle of crowds, don’t worry. It’s just a short drive to all the activities that Gulf Shores and Orange Beach have to offer.
