Activities & the Weather
During the day, the temperatures are in the low 60s to high 70s, making it perfect for hiking or biking on one of the many trails in Gulf State Park or Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail. Pack up your entire group and spend the day at Gulf State Park. You can fish from the public pier, or just watch the regulars showing off their skills. Spend the day playing on the many miles of pristine white beaches or start your own friendly tennis tournament. And, there’s more – rent a boat, kayak or paddle board and cruise up and down the surf line or head inland for a different view of this coastal park. Get in a round of golf at the park’s course. Whatever you decide to do, don’t forget to bring a picnic lunch or grill those fish you caught earlier.
The Hugh S. Branyon Backcounty Trail started out as Native American hunting trails, and there is still plenty of wildlife to see while you hike through various coastal ecosystems. The trail is now on the Alabama Coastal Bird Trail, making it a nice stop for birders. Not into birds? Keep an eye out for white tail deer, coyotes, and the ever-popular reptilian alligator.
If birdwatching is your thing, you know spring is when migratory birds begin their journey, and stop along the Alabama Coastal Birding Trail. Head to the Bon Secour Wildlife Refuge in Gulf Shores for your best bet for adding to your birding life list. The Refuge is a sanctuary for endangered and threatened plants, fish and wildlife, as well as being a well-known stopover point for migrating birds. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch a glimpse of one of the endangered species that call the refuge home like the Alabama beach mouse or a Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle.
The water temperature is starting to rise, but is still on the cool side. Spring is for beach activities on the sand or in a boat (save the swimming in the surf for summer!). Work up a sweat in a friendly beach volleyball game, or take long walks along the beach with your sweetie. Stick around for Spring Break and the beach will really get hopping. If you don’t like the crowds but still need to be near the water, head inland to a lake, back to the bay or take a cruise through the back marshes.
And, spring is when fishing really starts back up. After a long fishless winter, you can start hooking redfish, grouper and amberjack. Bring your boat or kayak and all your gear with you or rent what you need the day you go. Select one of our rentals with access to a dock or pier and you’ll be that much closer to starting out. You can stroll down to the dock and fish for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Nothing tastes better than fish you’ve caught yourself.
Or take a Dolphin and Nature Cruise. Let someone else do the driving while you watch the dolphins frolic around the boat and enjoy the beautiful gulf scenery. Try a sunset cruise with your favorite partner and start the evening off right. Catch dinner or just watch it swim by, your choice.
