With over two miles of white sandy beaches, there’s plenty of space for your favorite beach activities. Do a little fishing off the pier, or just have fun watching the local fishermen pulling in their catches and the seagulls diving around looking for lunch. Be sure to watch under the pier too, where cool things swim by in the water looking for a quick snack – fish, turtles, stingrays, dolphins, sharks and more! Rent a kayak or canoe for fun on Lake Shelby. And the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trails wind through the area for over 15 miles of trails as they make their way through various coastal ecosystems. Keep an eye out for the local residents as you hike, raccoons too, as white tailed deer, heron, snakes, turtles and alligators share the trails.
And kids of all ages will love to spend the day at the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo! Everyone can get up close and personal at the Animal Encounters while they play with loony lemurs and crazy kangaroos, pet slow-moving sloths and feed the giraffes. Many of the animals you’ll meet at the zoo are endangered species like red ruffled lemurs, African grey parrots, and the pangolin. Several of the endangered animals are longtime residents of the zoo like Katrina, a beautiful black leopard, and Rajah, a Bengal tiger. And not all of the residents are from countries far away, some are from very close to home like the Alabama gopher tortoise, American black bear and American bobcat. A visit to the zoo is a great way for everyone to learn about conservation and wildlife.
Load everyone into the car for the short trip to The Wharf in Orange Beach where you’ll find a little of everything. Activities include a movie theater, mini golf, an arcade and escape room, and even a zip line! Plus, there is a wide variety of restaurants and bars when you need a little refreshment. A ride on the Ferris wheel will be the perfect ending to a great day.
