For the younger crowd, Memorial Day means a three-day weekend and the start of summer, complete with cookouts and picnics. But as we get older, the significance of the holiday becomes more meaningful. This is a time for remembering and honoring all those who have served in the U.S. military. Here are a few suggestions for how to make the most out of a Gulf Shores Memorial Day weekend.
The following events might be postponed or altered due to COVID-19. Be sure to check event websites.
Remembrances & History
- Fort Morgan, part of the Mobile Bay Civil War Trail, played an important role in the Battle of Mobile Bay. This masonry fort was active not only in the Civil War, but also in the Spanish American War, WWI, and WWII. Aside from the fascinating fort that you can tour, this historic site has a boat launch, picnic area, and scenic beaches. To celebrate Memorial Day in Gulf Shores, the fort will have a wreath-laying ceremony, weapons demonstrations, and artillery firing.
- Pack the car and take a short drive from Gulf Shores to Pensacola, where you’ll find the National Naval Aviation Museum. You can watch the Blue Angels practice and follow up with a walk through the world’s largest aviation museum. Get up close and personal to over 150 restored aircraft and a full-motion simulator. The museum captures the spirit and determination of our flying fighters from 1914 to the present. Admission to the museum is free and is open daily.
- Gulf State Park has it all when it comes to Memorial Day in Gulf Shores. From miles of bright white beaches to parasailing rentals to exciting games of volleyball, this park is your headquarters for an amazing day spent in the great outdoors. You can cast a line from the fishing pier or hike along the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail, which is home to over 25 miles of trails and six distinct ecosystems. Be on the lookout for alligators, coyotes, otters, white-tailed deer, osprey, bald eagles, heron, and more.
- It doesn’t get better than Memorial Day spent on the beach. Enjoy the day by swimming, fishing, paddle boarding, or kayaking. You can also head to one of the local beach hangouts for delicious fresh-caught seafood and live music. LuLu’s, The Hangout, and the Flora-Bama always have something fun going on!
