Naturally, you will want to visit the Fort Morgan Historic Site at the end of the peninsula. Named for the Revolutionary war hero Daniel Morgan, this historic site has been used in the Spanish American War, WWI and WWII. Have you heard that famous quote, “Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!” somewhere? Well, Union Admiral David G. Farragut said that here in the waters off Fort Morgan in 1864, during the Battle of Mobile Bay. The fort itself houses a boat launch and gift shop.
The long peninsula between Gulf Shores and the fort site is also home to the Bon Secour National Refuge. The refuge habitats include not only beaches and dunes, but also scrub forests, wetlands and lakes. Both the fort and the refuge are on the Alabama Coastal Birding Trail, and this is truly a birders’ paradise.
