Must-See Animal Exhibits 

The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo is home to 118 species of animals, including 22 critically endangered, endangered, vulnerable, or near-threatened species. It’s a rich, diverse family of animals under the zoo’s care and they’re dedicated to providing them with the best home possible and educating the public about them.

Can’t Miss Animal Encounters 

The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo is proud to offer a collection of one-of-a-kind animal encounters. It gives adults and children a unique opportunity to learn about certain species in an up-close and personal format.  

• Petting Zoo – Everyone from adults to toddlers can feed and pet gentle goats, sheep, donkeys, and deer. 
• Lemur Encounters – Get up close and personal with some of the zoo’s most charming, hilarious characters. This is a unique and rare opportunity to learn about black-and-white-ruffed lemurs and red-ruffed lemurs while they climb on you, sit on your head, and snuggle during their playtime. Oh, and they love posing for photos, so keep your camera ready! 
• Sloth Encounters – Get up close for an opportunity to feed and learn about these gentle creatures and discover that while they’re slow movers, they are loaded with personality. Have your camera ready to capture this unique animal experience! 
• Kangaroo Encounters – Learn about young red kangaroos through this up close, hands-on experience. Let the zoo’s friendly and knowledgeable staff teach you about these lovable Aussie creatures while having a memorable experience. Depending on their age, they can be gently held or touched while they hop and play around the enclosure. They aren’t camera-shy, so be ready to take fantastic photos!

Hours: 

Open Daily 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. 

Kangaroo and Sloth Encounters 

Available 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (weather permitting) 

Lemur Encounters (masks required) 

Available 10 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (weather permitting) 

Giraffe feedings are offered twice daily 

10 a.m. – 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. (weather permitting) 

Please Note: 

For the health of the staff and animals, it is strongly recommended that all guests observe social distancing practices. Masks are required during lemur encounters and are suggested where social distancing is not possible.  

Holiday Hours 

Open Christmas Eve from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. 

Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day

If someone in your group is celebrating a birthday or special event, let the zoo know beforehand. The zoo offers party perks to add even more fun to your zoo celebration! There’s no end to the fun that can be had at the zoo in Gulf Shores.
