Arts and Culture Journey to Gulf Shores

Gulf Shores is more than lovely beaches and fun in the sun. There is an active arts community with a myriad of galleries and studios for browsing and purchasing fine arts and crafts. There are even Gulf Shores art studios for learning how to do it yourself.

Gulf Shores Art and Fine Art

Visit the Gulf Coast Arts Alliance for a variety of art related activities. Browse through the gallery and gift shop representing more than 50 local and regional artists with paintings, pottery, jewelry and other Gulf Shores art for sale. Open Monday – Saturday, 10am to 5pm, find unique handcrafted items aplenty here. The Alliance also sponsors weekend Art Markets, where artists display and sell their work. Live music and children’s art activities make this a fun attraction for the entire family. If you are looking for something more hands-on, private or small group art lessons are available weekly. Check their website for hours, contact info, and lessons availability.

For fine art lovers, two of the local galleries include The Susan N. McCullough Fine Art Gallery and Tino’s Fine Art & Frames. Susan N. McCullough’s abstract expressionist art is available for viewing and sale at her gallery on Cypress Bend Drive. Tino’s features Rick Tino’s original artwork as well as that of other local and regional artists and includes paintings, prints, mosaics and potter, and glass art. Check their websites for directions and gallery hours.

If you love ceramics, check out these two studios. At Pottery Central, you can watch Steven Dark creating his unusual ceramic work, among other local potters’ art. Take a look at Steven’s Facebook page for current hours and what’s in the shop. Or, visit the Sea Oat Studio. Pottery by nationally recognized master potters from Gulf Shores is on display and for sale. Check the studio’s Facebook page for directions and studio hours.

Live Performances

For live performances, look for the SummerTide Theater. Dance and theater students from the University of Alabama stage plays and musicals during the summer. The South Baldwin Community Theater is a non-profit theater operated and comprised entirely of volunteers that hosts some amazing Gulf Shores, Alabama activities. Visit their website for hours and to see what’s playing while you’re in town, or for volunteer opportunities.
