In March, plan to attend the Annual Festival of Art. This free event offers everything from fine arts to arts & crafts to fun and tacky beachside souvenirs. There’s something at the festival for every taste and every budget. The Gulf Coast Arts Alliance (which puts on the event) also sponsors Art Markets during the year in various locations throughout the area. It’s a great way to spend the weekend! Dozens of local artists gather to display and sell their work, as well as giving demonstrations. Plenty of food, live music and children’s arts and crafts make this a fun family event.
April is time for the Flora-Bama Mullet Toss and Mullet Man Triathlon! These annual events have been entertaining locals and visitors for years. The weather is lovely, and there couldn’t be a prettier course for a triathlon. Participants start with a swim in the beautiful blue gulf waters, then the bike course loops back towards the bar, and the run finishes things off. Whether you participate, are there just to cheer everyone on, or just came for the after-party, it’s all great fun. And of course, there’s the Mullet Toss! It’s just what you would expect. Come see how far you can toss a dead mullet over the Florida-Alabama line! It’s another great time to party at the Flora-Bama (and contributions from each mullet tossed with go to local charities). The popular Flora-Bama honky tonk has oysters, beer, live music and fun events year-round. If you make it to Gulf Shores, you owe it to yourself to make at least one visit to the Flora-Bama!
And on every third weekend in May, the public beaches in front of the Hangout Bar in Gulf Shores transform into the annual Hangout Festival. Past performers include Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, the Dave Matthews Band, and The Avette Brothers. Each year the festival offers a variety of music, and there’s sure to be a band or two you’ll want to hear. If you can’t make it to the festival in May, don’t worry. The Hangout has great music year-round and is the perfect beach bar hangout.

With the balmy spring weather, it’s the perfect time to hike the coast. All trails in the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail complex are ADA accessible, and it’s on the Alabama Coastal Bird Trail. Jog, skate, hike or bike, just stay on the lookout for alligators, otters, white tailed deer, bald eagles, heron and more. These trails began as early Native American hunting paths and you can take a guided Eco-Tour to learn more about their history. There are eight accessible trails, a Butterfly Garden, nature pavilion and a kids’ rock climbing area.
Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge is a stopover for migrating birds, and its trails wind through maritime forests, wetlands, dunes and scrub habitat, a saltwater lagoon and the transitional habitats in between. Make sure you climb the observation tower for an amazing view of the refuge. Wander the refuge on your own, or take a guided tour – bird walks, dune hikes and fun night prowls are offered year-round. If there’s a bird lover in your group, this is place to be for the spring migration stop over.
