If beachfront honky-tonk bars are your idea of a good time, then you’ve already been to the world-famous Flora-Bama Lounge and Oyster Bar on the Gulf Coast of Florida, right on the ‘Bama line. Since the late seventies, Flora-Bama has been a mecca for beachgoers looking for music and fun. Known for their multiple music stages and oyster bar, this beach bar also hosts exciting events throughout the year.
The Flora-Bama Mullet Toss (which is just what it sounds like) and the Mullet Man Triathlon are just two of the popular events put on by this famous Gulf Coast bar. For over twenty years, the Mullet Man Triathlon has given athletes a way to compete against friends and family while never leaving their favorite beach party place.
The triathlon course winds in and around the bar, starting out with a ¼-mile swim in the beautiful Gulf. Participants then transition to the biking part of the race and head west on Alabama Highway 182, then loop back towards the bar. The last segment is the run, again heading west to start, then back under the Perdido Pass Bridge and to the Flora-Bama. The triathlon has several different race categories, (including a First Timers), so there is sure to be one that fits you fitness level.
Not only does the triathlon take place in one of the most beautiful beach areas on the planet, there is also one heck of a party after the race. With five different entertainment areas, there will be music playing somewhere for everyone. There will be plenty of food and adult beverages for everyone too. And, don’t forget the famous Oyster Bar!
This year the Triathlon will take place on Saturday, April 13th, starting at 7:30am. Early admission is $90 plus a $6.90 fee. Admission fees go up after February 28th. Register online at the Mullet Man Alabama Triathlon website. The race will be held rain or shine, and fees are non-refundable. Last minute registration and race packet pick-up will be at the Flora-Bama on Friday, April 12th from 4pm – 7pm and Saturday, April 13th from 6am – 7am – head for the big tent.
This Alabama triathlon will donate part of the proceeds of the race to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society this year, so come by and help out a great cause. The Flora-Bama Lounge & Oyster Bar is located at 17401 Perdido Key Drive in Perdido Key, Florida. For updates and additional information, check the Flora-Bama’s website. For questions, email the bar at info@florabama.com or give them a call at 850-483-6267.
