With miles of protected preserves, Perdido Key is the perfect place for outdoor activities, especially water based activities, and especially fishing! There are always fish to be caught, no matter where on the island you fish, no matter what type of Perdido Key fishing you enjoy, and no matter what time of year it is.
What You’ll Catch and Where to Fish
Basically, fishing in Perdido Key is good anywhere on the island! That said, the best way to start fishing the key and to get the most out of your trip is to hire a charter. The captain will take care of licenses, bait and gear, and you’ll head out offshore, fish the wrecks and reefs, or head into the lagoons. The captain and his crew will know what’s biting and where. You just have to show up and land your catch. If you’re on the lookout for that elusive trophy fish, charter a deep sea trip and be prepared to spend all day on the choppy Gulf waters. But, if you land a big Spanish mackerel or amberjack, it will be worth it!
As you become more familiar with the local waters, head out on your own. There’s nothing like testing your skills at landing a redfish from a kayak on light gear or a fly rod. Or if your balance is good, try fishing from a paddleboard! Hit the calmer waters of the lagoons and backwaters and keep an eye out for fish, turtles and other wildlife. You’ll need all your angling skills to land your catch.
Inshore, there are mangroves, bayous, lagoons, tidal creeks and rivers to fish. Big Lagoon State Park and Johnson’s Beach both offer a variety of spots to fish from, including bridges, buoys, grass beds, mangroves and shallow drop offs. These areas are perfect for catching redfish, flounder, and mangrove snappers, among others.
On the Gulf side, you can fish from the beach into the surf or fish from one of the jetties. You’ll be pulling in pompano, bluefish, redfish, trout, and an occasional shark or tuna. You can set things up on the beach, and the kids can play in the surf while you catch dinner. This is the perfect low key way to teach the kids to fish too.
