Average temperatures are still in the mid-60s to high 70s, and lows are just getting into the 50s. It’s the perfect time for those outdoor activities that were just too hot during the summer months.
Grab the kids and drive on over to Gulf State Park for the day. Get in some fishing or just watch what’s swimming under the pier—sharks, stingrays and other cool stuff! There are miles of bright white beaches ready for parasailing, kayaking, or paddleboarding in the surf. Or try your hand at geocaching!
Hike or bike on the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail complex near the Park; keep on the lookout for alligators, white tailed deer, bald eagles, herons, coyotes, otters and more. Accessible trails wind through different ecosystems including dunes, maritime forests, freshwater marshes, and hardwood swamps and each trail has signs identifying the various plants and wildlife found in that habitat. White-topped pitcher plants near the marshes is just one highlight. Take time to visit the Butterfly Garden and the kids can try rock climbing at Bouldering Park. And fall is prime birdwatching time!
Fall in Gulf Shores is also the perfect time for golf. The temps are mild, and the crowds are down! Kiva Dunes Resort & Golf and the Gulf State Park Golf Course are just two of the many great courses in the area.
Take the kids to the Alabama Gulf State Zoo. Grab some cotton candy, walk through the exhibits and learn about the animals that live there. The kids will love feeding the giraffe or petting armadillos and lemurs!
Festivals & Food!
Here are a few of the area festivals that you need to put on your fall trip list, all close to our vacation homes for rent in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Eat shrimp fixed any way you can imagine at the Annual National Shrimp Festival in October. Shrimp lovers come from all over the country for this popular festival. The Hangout Oyster Cook-off & Craft Beer Weekend is in November; what could be better than live music, fresh oysters and craft beer at the beach?
And, for something sweet, the Alabama Pecan Festival is held every November too, with all the pralines and pecan pie you can eat! Be sure to grab an extra pecan pie (or two) for Thanksgiving. Of course, the world-famous Flora-Bama will be having their last Bikini Contest of the year, and it includes some serious BBQ. Bikinis & BBQ – not a bad way to end the summer!
If you’re at the beach over Thanksgiving, many restaurants will be offering special holiday menus, and the Hangout and the Flora-Bama will be serving up something special as always. The Flora-Bama will be offering its annual, slightly less traditional take on the holiday with their annual potluck. Bring a side dish or desert and make some new friends, the honky tonk will provide the ham and turkey. For a fancier meal with all the traditional trimmings, reserve your spot at the Voyagers and Grand Ballroom at the nearby Perdido Beach Resort.
Prefer to stay in for your holiday meal? Pre-order a delicious take-out feast and serve it up in your fall beach rental. The fully equipped kitchen in your rental will also make cooking your family’s favorite traditional Thanksgiving meal easy if you want to go that route. Either way, you can eat out on your rental’s porch or deck in your comfy clothes and enjoy the sound of the waves and cool ocean breeze while you eat. Just a few more things to give thanks for.
