However, 2020 is a year unlike any other we’ve experienced lately. There have been epidemics in our country before (the cholera outbreak in the 1800s, typhoid fever and of course polio in the early 1900s come to mind), but nothing has hit the US (or the world) with such force and been so wide-spread in a while. No one knows when things will be getting back to normal (if ever), so we have all made changes in our lifestyles to reflect what has become “the new normal.”
But, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your beach vacation for 4th of July Gulf Shores! Beach fun and sun are part of the Fourth, and the beautiful Gulf beaches are now open! Things may be a little strange, but then that’s sort of normal in Gulf Shores!
2020 Gulf Shores Fourth of July Celebrations Around Gulf Shores
Public celebrations have been particularly hard hit during this pandemic. No St. Patrick’s Day or Easter Sunday celebrations this year. And now, no Fourth of July fireworks celebrations. Whether it’s a concert, parade or fireworks, things have been seriously curtailed if not cancelled.
While the city of Gulf Shores has cancelled its annual Fourth of July fireworks celebration, there are still places that plan on setting off fireworks. (This may change, so please check before you head out.) Here are some establishments that are planning on Independence Day celebrations.
Starting at 9pm on Saturday, The Beach Club in Gulf Shores and the Perdido Beach Resort (in nearby Orange Beach) will have a fireworks display. Also in Orange Beach, details are being finalized for The Wharf’s July Fourth celebrations, including fireworks at 8:45pm. The Flora-Bama will be hosting their Ms. Firecracker Bikini Contest and Freedom Race (free to enter) starting at 8am on Saturday, July 4th, as well as fireworks at 9pm. Every trip to the Gulf should include a trip to the world-famous Flora-Bama for bushwackers, the oyster bar and live music!
And the Park at OWA will shoot off fireworks as part of their 4th of July Gulf Shores celebrations. Located in nearby Foley, OWA (an amusement park centered on around a 14-acre lake) will also have activities for the kids, live entertainment, and pictures with Rosie the Riveter and Uncle Sam.
2020 DIY Fourth of July Celebrations in Gulf Shores
Don’t want to be celebrating with large crowds? Don’t worry, there are fun alternatives. This 4th of July, many of our celebrations will be more intimate, with many small gatherings in lieu of the large, boisterous crowds of the past. Grab everything you can find that’s red, white and blue and let your decorating demons loose. All it takes is a few minutes on Pinterest, Instagram and the like to find tons of suggestions for activities and decorations that will be perfect for your scaled-down celebrations. Decorate the deck or porch of your beach-front rental with red, white and blue so you and the kids can find it easily.
The beautiful, white sandy beaches of the Gulf are open! The kids can spend the day building sand castles, splashing in the surf and watching the dolphins frolic just out of reach. Spend the entire day at the beach! Adults can lay on the sand working on their tans or reading while the kids have fun with beach volleyball or just swimming around. Rent one of our beachfront cottages or condos and you can literally be steps away from the bright sands and sparkling blue Gulf waters. And you can enjoy an evening stroll along the surf while the kids play with bright, sizzling sparklers.
